Louis Masters was a notorious conman and schemer who harassed Estavelle and evaded justice for many years thanks to the loyal service of his talking book, Mr. Encyclopedia. Eventually succumbed to a rare and incurable disease, which some believed was intentionally inflicted on him.
On his deathbed he confessed to his last trick. Instead of Mr. Encyclopedia going to his daughter Louise Masters, as everyone including Louise expected, Louis revealed that he agreed to allow Mr. Encyclopedia to choose who would be his next owner in exchange for absolute loyalty. To everyone's surprise Mr. Encyclopedia chose Natasha Winter, the young ward of Father Everett Winter?.
